How to use the keyboard tester
Click inside the dashed box and press keys one at a time. The blue key is the one being held down; keys turn green when they have been pressed at least once. While the box is active, the tester stops the browser reacting to keys such as Tab, F5 or Backspace so you can test them; click anywhere outside the box to go back to normal.
key is the character or name the key produces (it changes with the layout and Shift), code is the physical key position (it stays the same whatever the layout) and keyCode is the older numeric value, still shown by many tools. Some keys cannot be detected by a web page — for example the Windows key on some systems, the Fn key on most laptops and media keys.
Nothing you type is recorded or sent anywhere; the test runs entirely in your browser.
