How paper sizes work

The international A series (ISO 216) starts with A0, an area of one square metre, and each next size is half the previous one, cut across the longer side — so A4 (210 × 297 mm) is half of A3 and every size has the same 1 : √2 proportions. B sizes sit between A sizes and are used for books and posters; C sizes are envelopes that fit the matching A size. The UK, Europe and most of the world use A4; the US and Canada use Letter (8.5 × 11 in) and Legal (8.5 × 14 in).

To get pixel sizes, multiply inches by the DPI: A4 at 300 DPI is 2480 × 3508 pixels. PDF points are 1/72 inch. To resize an image to a paper size, see the image resizer.
