How to record
Press Start recording and allow the microphone when your browser asks. Speak at a normal volume; the level bar should move but stay out of the red. You can pause and resume as often as you like. Press Stop and save, listen to the result, then choose MP3, WAV or the original file and press Prepare download.
Tips for a clean recording
Record in a quiet room, keep the microphone about a hand-width from your mouth and use headphones if you are playing sound at the same time, so the speakers do not leak into the recording. If the bar never moves, check that the right microphone is selected, that it is not muted and that your browser or system has not blocked it.
Which format should I choose?
MP3 works on every phone, computer and app. WAV is uncompressed and large (about 5 MB a minute for a mono voice) but ideal for editing. Original is what your browser recorded (WebM or Ogg with Opus in Chrome, Edge and Firefox; M4A in Safari): it is available at once and has the best quality for its size, but some older programs cannot open it. To trim it afterwards use the MP3 Cutter, to cut the pauses use Remove Silence from Audio, and to change the format use the Audio Converter.
Frequently asked questions
Is my recording uploaded?
No. It is kept in your browser’s memory until you save it or close the page. Closing or reloading the page loses an unsaved recording, so the page asks before it lets you leave.
How long can I record?
Up to the limit shown at the top. Converting a long recording to MP3 or WAV needs memory, which is why the length is limited; you can cancel a conversion at any time.
The browser says the microphone is blocked. What now?
Click the lock or camera icon at the left of the address bar, set the microphone to Allow, and press Start recording again. On a phone, also check that the browser is allowed to use the microphone in the system settings.
Can it record the sound my computer is playing?
No. This tool records from a microphone only.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in current browsers. Keep the screen on and stay on the page while recording: some phones pause the microphone when you switch to another app.
