How this works
Quick answer
A 4-year-old rabbit is roughly 35 to 45 in human terms. The RSPCA calls rabbits ‘senior’ somewhere between 5 and 8 years.
How the result is calculated, step by step
- One year old counts as about 20 human years.
- Each year after that adds about 6, or up to about 8 for large breeds.
- We work out both versions, take the lowest and the highest, and show the multiples of five that enclose them.
Example: a rabbit of 4. Standard: 20 + 3 × 6 = 38. Large breed: 20 + 3 × 8 = 44. The band shown is 35 to 45.
Where the numbers come from, and what they assume
- Both sources for the human-age rule are rabbit-care websites. The Bunny Lady says the idea is ‘mostly made up’ with no scientific calculation, and Everbreed calls it a life-stage comparison, not a measurement.
- The life stages and lifespan come from the RSPCA, which gives ages but no human equivalents.
Why animal age and human age are not exact equivalents. Species age in different ways: growth, breeding age, illness and old age do not line up with ours year for year. A ‘human age’ is only a way of picturing where an animal is in its life. Two animals of the same age can be at very different stages of health.
How much you can trust each result
| Result | Confidence label | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| Human-equivalent range | Popular rule of thumb — rough idea only | Rules of thumb from The Bunny Lady: Rabbit years to human years, Everbreed: Rabbit years to human years |
| Life stage | Veterinary life-stage guideline | RSPCA: Rabbits (life stages and lifespan) |
| Share of a typical lifespan | Veterinary life-stage guideline | Typical lifespan: 8 to 12 years. With a safe environment, good diet, health checks and companionship a rabbit can typically live 8 to 12 years, and some live longer. (RSPCA: Rabbits (life stages and lifespan)) Most rabbits live approximately 8 to 12 years; 15 is not unheard of. (The Bunny Lady: Rabbit years to human years) Many well-cared-for indoor rabbits live approximately 8 to 12 years. (Everbreed: Rabbit years to human years) |
- Scientific formula: a formula fitted to research data that we read in the original paper.
- Peer-reviewed scientific article: a peer-reviewed article in the scientific or veterinary literature that we read, but not an official guideline issued by a veterinary or animal-welfare body.
- Veterinary life-stage guideline: stages or lifespans published by a veterinary body or animal-welfare organisation whose page we read.
- Popular rule of thumb — rough idea only: a rule that appears only in secondary sources (care websites, articles). We read at least two, show the result as a range, list what we read below, and found no primary scientific basis for it.
Limits
- Breed, size, diet, housing, companionship and illness all change how a rabbit ages. A life stage says nothing about how healthy an individual rabbit is.
- Published charts differ by a year or two, which is why we show a band.
- Breed or type, size, health, genetics and environment all change how an animal ages. None of them is in the calculation.
- The maximum age this page accepts (20 years) is only a sanity check, not a claim about how long rabbits live.
Sources and date checked
Everything below was opened and read on 27 September 2026. If a page has changed since, the numbers here may be out of date.
- The Bunny Lady: Rabbit years to human years — what we read: About 3 human years per month for the first four months, about 20 at one year, then about 6 per year (7–8 for large breeds of 10 lb or more). The page itself says the idea is ‘mostly made up’ with no scientific calculation. (checked 27 September 2026)
- Everbreed: Rabbit years to human years — what we read: About 3 human years per month for the first four months, 20 at one year, then 6 per year; typical lifespan 8–12 years. Calls the result a ‘life-stage comparison, not an exact biological or veterinary measurement’. (checked 27 September 2026)
- RSPCA: Rabbits (life stages and lifespan) — what we read: Weaning 4–8 weeks, puberty from 3–5 months, full maturity 7–9 months, ‘senior’ at 5–8 years, typical lifespan 8 to 12 years. No human-age equivalence. (checked 27 September 2026)
