Budgerigar Age Calculator
Enter your budgie’s age (or date of birth) to see roughly how far through a typical lifespan it is. We do not convert to human years. Nothing leaves your browser.

How this works
Quick answer
Pet budgies typically live about 8 to 12 years, though some reach 15 or more. A budgie of 5 is very roughly 42% to 64% of the way through.
How the result is calculated, step by step
- We turn your budgie’s date of birth or age into years and months.
- We divide the age by the two figures we read, 7.8 years (an average) and 12 years (with proper care).
- The result is a share of a typical lifespan, not a life stage.
Example: a budgie of 5 years. 5 ÷ 12 is 42% and 5 ÷ 7.8 is 64%, so it is roughly 42% to 64% of the way through a typical lifespan.
Where the numbers come from, and what they assume
- Two sources, which differ: PetMD (10–12 with proper care) and Wikipedia’s summary of the research it cites (average 7.8, up to 15–21). We did not read the underlying studies.
- ‘Typical’ therefore covers a wide band, and the true figure for your bird may lie outside it.
Why we do not show human years. We do not show human years or life stages for budgerigars. No source we read gave a conversion or ages for stages, and reported lifespans span from under 8 to over 20 years.
How much you can trust each result
| Result | Confidence label | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| Human-equivalent age | Not shown | Not shown: see the explanation above. |
| Life stage | Not shown | We found no life-stage ages for budgerigars in the sources we read, so we show none. |
| Share of a typical lifespan | Popular rule of thumb — rough idea only | Typical lifespan: about 8 to 12 years, with reports of 15 to 21. 10–12 years with proper care. (PetMD: Budgie care sheet) In captivity budgerigars live an average of 7.8 years, but life spans of 15–21 years have been reported. (Wikipedia: Budgerigar) |
- Scientific formula: a formula fitted to research data that we read in the original paper.
- Peer-reviewed scientific article: a peer-reviewed article in the scientific or veterinary literature that we read, but not an official guideline issued by a veterinary or animal-welfare body.
- Veterinary life-stage guideline: stages or lifespans published by a veterinary body or animal-welfare organisation whose page we read.
- Popular rule of thumb — rough idea only: a rule that appears only in secondary sources (care websites, articles). We read at least two, show the result as a range, list what we read below, and found no primary scientific basis for it.
Limits
- Diet, cage, exercise, breed lines, and vet care all change how long a bird lives. Ask a vet who treats birds about anything that worries you.
- Breed or type, size, health, genetics and environment all change how an animal ages. None of them is in the calculation.
- The maximum age this page accepts (30 years) is only a sanity check, not a claim about how long budgerigars live.
Sources and date checked
Everything below was opened and read on 27 September 2026. If a page has changed since, the numbers here may be out of date.
- PetMD: Budgie care sheet — what we read: ‘10–12 years with proper care’. No life stages. (checked 27 September 2026)
- Wikipedia: Budgerigar — what we read: ‘In captivity, budgerigars live an average of 7.8 years, but life spans of 15–21 years have been reported’ (citing Reavill & Dorrestein 2010 and Brouwer et al. 2000, which we did not read). (checked 27 September 2026)
