Guinea Pig Age Calculator
Enter your guinea pig’s age (or date of birth) to see the life stage and where it sits against typical lifespans. We deliberately do not convert to human years. Nothing leaves your browser.

How this works
Quick answer
Most guinea pigs are juveniles until about 6 months, adults until about 4 or 5 years, then seniors. Typical lifespans are 4 to 8 years.
How the result is calculated, step by step
- We turn your guinea pig’s date of birth or age into years and months.
- We compare it with the life-stage boundaries the two sources agree on (adult at 6 months; senior at 4 or 5 years).
- We divide the age by the shortest and longest typical lifespans we read (4 and 8 years) to show roughly how far through life your pet is.
Example: a guinea pig of 3 years is an adult. 3 ÷ 8 is 38% and 3 ÷ 4 is 75%, so it is roughly 38% to 75% of the way through a typical lifespan.
Where the numbers come from, and what they assume
- The stage ages come from two pet-health sources that read as independent (Oxbow and a PetMD article reviewed by a veterinarian). Neither is a formal guideline, and they disagree about when ‘senior’ starts.
- The lifespan range takes the shortest and longest typical figures among five sources (RSPCA, PDSA, Oxbow, PetMD and Guinea Lynx).
Why we do not show human years. We do not show human years for guinea pigs. Every source we read gave stages and lifespans only, none gave a conversion, and a small rodent’s life is so much shorter than ours that any single ‘human age’ would be invented precision.
How much you can trust each result

| Life stage | Popular rule of thumb — rough idea only | Oxbow Animal Health: Guinea pig life stages and lifespan (updated 1 June 2023); PetMD: How long do guinea pigs live? (reviewed by a veterinarian) |
| Share of a typical lifespan | Popular rule of thumb — rough idea only | Typical lifespan: 4 to 8 years. Typically 5–6 years, but some may live longer. (RSPCA: Guinea pigs) On average between four and eight years. (PDSA: Guinea pigs as pets) 5 to 7 years on average. (Oxbow Animal Health: Guinea pig life stages and lifespan (updated 1 June 2023)) Hairless guinea pigs average 7–8 years and long-haired about 4. (PetMD: How long do guinea pigs live? (reviewed by a veterinarian)) Average life expectancy 5 to 7 years; some live beyond 10. (Guinea Lynx: Aging) |
- Scientific formula: a formula fitted to research data that we read in the original paper.
- Peer-reviewed scientific article: a peer-reviewed article in the scientific or veterinary literature that we read, but not an official guideline issued by a veterinary or animal-welfare body.
- Veterinary life-stage guideline: stages or lifespans published by a veterinary body or animal-welfare organisation whose page we read.
- Popular rule of thumb — rough idea only: a rule that appears only in secondary sources (care websites, articles). We read at least two, show the result as a range, list what we read below, and found no primary scientific basis for it.
Limits
- Coat type matters: PetMD reports about 4 years for long-haired and 7–8 for hairless guinea pigs. Genetics, diet, housing and illness matter too.
- A life stage says nothing about how healthy an individual guinea pig is. Ask a vet who treats small animals about anything that worries you, at any age.
- Breed or type, size, health, genetics and environment all change how an animal ages. None of them is in the calculation.
- The maximum age this page accepts (15 years) is only a sanity check, not a claim about how long guinea pigs live.
