UK check: does this meet the National Minimum Wage?

An estimate, not a compliance check. Under UK law, the extra (“premium”) part of an enhanced overtime rate — the bit above your lowest rate for the same work — does not count towards National Minimum Wage pay; only the base-rate part and the hours worked do. Rates are those on GOV.UK from 1 April 2026 (checked 7 October 2026).

How it is worked out

Overtime pay is your regular hourly rate multiplied by the overtime multiplier (time and a half or double time), multiplied by the overtime hours worked. Total pay is regular pay plus overtime pay.

How the UK minimum wage check works

HMRC's rule for “premium rates of pay” (National Minimum Wage Manual, NMWM09270) says: assume every hour worked — regular and overtime — was paid at the regular hourly rate, then anything paid on top of that is the premium element, which is stripped out before checking National Minimum Wage pay. This tool divides (total pay minus the premium element) by total hours to get the rate that counts, and compares it with the National Living Wage / National Minimum Wage for the worker's age band.

This does not check holiday pay. Case law (and the 2024 holiday pay reforms) say that regular/compulsory overtime counts towards “normal remuneration” when working out statutory holiday pay, not just basic pay — see the Holiday Entitlement Calculator. To check a plain hourly rate (no overtime) against the minimum wage, use the National Living Wage & Minimum Wage Checker.
