Configure Windows VPS for Trading
Set up a Windows VPS properly for running trading platforms and EAs around the clock.
The Problem
A generic Windows VPS isn't ready for trading out of the box — power settings, auto-updates and remote desktop defaults can all cause an unexpected restart or disconnect at exactly the wrong moment.
About this problem
A stock Windows VPS image is configured for general use, not for always-on trading. Windows Update can schedule automatic reboots, power plans can allow display or disk sleep, and default Remote Desktop settings often leave the server exposed to constant login attempts or disconnect idle sessions, which can close the platform running inside them.
People usually look for this after a trading platform has been found closed in the morning, after an unexpected reboot during a session, or when moving a platform from a home PC to a VPS for the first time and wanting it set up properly before relying on it.
What's Included
- Disabling automatic restarts and Windows Update reboots during trading hours
- Configuring power settings so the VPS never sleeps
- Setting up remote desktop access securely
- General cleanup so the VPS runs lean with resources free for your trading platform
What's NOT Included
- Provisioning or paying for the VPS itself
- Trading strategy advice — this is infrastructure setup only
- Installing specific brokers' platforms (see the MetaTrader service)
How It Works
- I review the current Windows Update, power plan and Remote Desktop settings to see what could cause a reboot, sleep or disconnect.
- I set update behaviour (via local policy or settings) so that Windows does not restart automatically outside the window you choose.
- I switch the power plan to high performance and disable sleep and hibernation for the system and disks.
- I harden Remote Desktop by confirming Network Level Authentication is on, reviewing the account and port exposure, and setting session timeout rules so disconnected sessions stay alive.
- I disable or trim unnecessary startup items and background services to free memory and CPU for the trading platform.
- I reboot once to confirm the settings persist and the server returns in the expected state.
In practice: you buy the service, send over whatever access or details the job needs, I investigate and do the work, and you confirm it's resolved before we call it done.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I stop Windows Update restarting my VPS automatically?
- Automatic restarts can be controlled through Windows Update settings or local group policy. I configure this so updates do not force a reboot while you are trading, though you will still need to apply updates manually at a time that suits you.
- Will my trading platform stay running after I disconnect from remote desktop?
- I configure session settings so a disconnected session stays active rather than being logged off. Whether the platform itself restarts after a reboot is a separate setup, covered by the auto-restart service.
- Is it safe to leave remote desktop open on a trading VPS?
- It carries risk if left on defaults. I enable the standard protections such as Network Level Authentication and review how the port is exposed, but I cannot make any internet-facing service risk-free.
- Do you install MetaTrader as part of this?
- No. This service prepares the Windows server itself. Installing MetaTrader or other platforms is a separate service.
- Can you set up a VPS for me from scratch with the provider?
- No. You provide an already provisioned Windows VPS and the access details. Buying or provisioning the server is not included.
- Will cleaning up the VPS delete my files?
- I only disable unneeded startup items and background services and remove obvious clutter. I will not delete your own data or platform files.
- Does this give me trading advice or strategy help?
- No. It is infrastructure configuration only.
