Student Loan Repayment Calculator

See what you repay each month on a UK student loan for the 2026/27 tax year, and roughly how long the loan would take to clear.

An estimate, not financial advice. Repayments are taken automatically through payroll or Self Assessment and the Student Loans Company holds your real balance — check it in your online account. The long-term projection depends on assumptions about interest, pay rises and future thresholds that nobody can know; treat it as an illustration only. Thresholds are from GOV.UK for 2026/27 (checked 25 September 2026).

How long would it take? (optional projection)

The interest rate is an example: enter the rate shown in your loan account (Plan 2 rates depend on income and change each September). The projection uses your undergraduate plan only and yearly steps.

How repayments work

You repay 9% of the income you earn above your plan’s threshold — £26,900 (Plan 1), £29,385 (Plan 2), £33,795 (Plan 4) or £25,000 (Plan 5). A postgraduate loan takes 6% of income above £21,000, in addition to any other plan. If you earn less than the threshold you repay nothing, and the amount is worked out on each pay period.

Loans are written off after a set time (25 years for Plan 1, 30 for Plans 2 and 4 and for postgraduate loans, 40 for Plan 5), so many borrowers never repay the whole balance. Repaying more voluntarily is not always sensible — think it through, or talk to an independent adviser, before overpaying.
