HMRC Mileage Allowance Calculator

Add up the approved mileage allowance for business miles driven, cycled or ridden in your own vehicle, and see any tax relief you could claim if you were paid less.

An estimate, not tax advice. Approved Mileage Allowance Payments (AMAPs) are for employees using their own vehicle for business travel (not commuting). Whether and how you can claim relief depends on your circumstances — check HMRC’s guidance, your payslips and your employer, or ask an accountant. Sole traders use different rules (simplified expenses). Rates: GOV.UK, checked 25 September 2026.

The approved rates

For 2026/27 the rate for cars and vans is 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year and 25p after that; motorcycles are 24p and bicycles 20p a mile. Up to 2025/26 the car and van rate for the first 10,000 miles was 45p. You can also be paid 5p per passenger per business mile for carrying a colleague on the same work journey.

Your employer can pay up to these amounts tax-free. If they pay less (or nothing), you may be able to claim “mileage allowance relief” on the difference — roughly the shortfall multiplied by your tax rate, which is what the estimate above shows. Keep a mileage log with dates, destinations and purposes.
