MOT Due Date Calculator

Work out when a vehicle needs its next MOT test, and the earliest date you can get it done without losing the renewal date.

Covers the standard rule only. For cars, motorcycles and most light vans. Some vehicle types (ambulances, taxis, certain goods vehicles) have different first-test ages. Source: GOV.UK: Getting an MOT (checked 7 October 2026).

How MOT timing works

A car, motorcycle or light van needs its first MOT on the third anniversary of its registration. After that, it needs a test every year, on the anniversary of its last MOT (or current expiry date). You can get the test done up to a month minus a day before the certificate runs out, and still keep the same renewal date a year later — getting it done earlier than that resets the renewal date to the new test date.
