What each tag does

The title and meta description are what search engines usually show as the blue link and the snippet under it; aim for a title of about 50–60 characters and a description of 120–160. The canonical link tells search engines which URL is the main version of a page. Robots controls indexing — leave it on default unless you want a page kept out of search results.

Open Graph tags control how a link looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and many other apps; the X (Twitter) card tags do the same on X. Search engines may rewrite titles and snippets, and these tags do not guarantee rankings. To check an existing page, use the meta tag checker.
