How mailto links work

A mailto link is an ordinary web link that starts with mailto:. Clicking it opens the visitor’s default email program with the fields filled in: extra recipients go in cc= and bcc=, and the subject and message in subject= and body=. Spaces, line breaks and symbols such as & ? = must be encoded (for example a space becomes %20 and a line break %0D%0A) — this tool does that for you.

Mailto links only carry plain text, cannot attach files, and depend on the visitor having an email program set up (many people use webmail and see nothing happen). A very long link may be cut off by some programs, so keep the message short. Putting a plain email address on a public page invites spam; see the email address obfuscator. Check the subject with the subject line checker.
