Long Division Calculator

Enter two numbers and see the division worked out step by step in the “bus stop” layout taught in UK schools, with the remainder or decimal answer.

How the bus stop method works

Work along the dividend from the left. At each digit, ask “how many times does the divisor go into this number?”, write that digit above the line, multiply back, subtract, then bring down the next digit. Whatever is left at the end is the remainder — or keep going with a decimal point and zeros to get a decimal answer.

If the divisor is a decimal (for example 0.15) both numbers are multiplied by 10, 100 and so on until it is a whole number; the answer does not change. Try 0.6 ÷ 0.15 = 4.
