EV vs Petrol Break-Even Calculator

See how many miles or years it takes an electric car's lower running costs to pay back a higher purchase price than a petrol car.

Work out your own pence-per-mile with the EV Charging Cost Calculator and the Fuel Economy Converter. This doesn't model servicing, insurance, depreciation or road tax differences — just the purchase price gap and the fuel/energy cost per mile.

How it is worked out

Price difference = electric car price − petrol car price. Saving per mile = petrol running cost − electric running cost. Break-even distance = price difference ÷ saving per mile — the point at which accumulated running-cost savings equal the extra you paid upfront. Break-even time = that distance ÷ your annual mileage.

Source: standard break-even arithmetic (price difference ÷ cost-per-mile saving).
