This is a generic starting template, not professional advice. It arranges what you write into a standard structure. Read it through, add specific evidence, and tailor it to each job — employers can tell a generic letter. Only include facts that are true.
What a good cover letter does
A cover letter is one page that says which job you want, why you are a good fit and why you want to work for them. Lead with your strongest, most relevant achievements and use numbers where you can. Match the words in the job advert, and keep it to about 250–400 words.
In the UK, address the letter to a named person if you can find one (then end with “Yours sincerely”); otherwise “Dear Hiring Manager” is acceptable and ends with “Yours faithfully”. Send your CV alongside — see our CV / resume builder.
