Coordinate formats explained
Decimal degrees (DD) write each coordinate as one number — 40.7128, -74.0060 — with negative values for south and west. Degrees, minutes, seconds (DMS) split a degree into 60 minutes and each minute into 60 seconds — 40° 42′ 46.08″ N. Degrees and decimal minutes (DDM) keep whole degrees and give minutes as a decimal — 40° 42.768′ N — a format common in aviation, sailing and geocaching. UTM divides the world into 60 zones and gives a position in metres east and north within the zone, using the WGS 84 datum; it is used in surveying, mapping and the military, and is not defined at the poles (beyond 84° N and 80° S). Latitude comes first and ranges from −90 to 90; longitude ranges from −180 to 180. Everything is calculated in your browser.
