Block Specific Countries via Cloudflare
Set up country-based access rules in Cloudflare to block or challenge traffic from specific regions.
The Problem
You're getting spam, attack traffic, or fraud attempts concentrated from specific countries you have no legitimate business in, and want to cut that traffic off at the edge before it reaches your server.
About this problem
Cloudflare identifies the country of each request from the visitor's IP address and lets you use that in firewall rules. Because rules run at Cloudflare's edge, matching requests are stopped before they reach your server, saving bandwidth, resources and log noise. The accuracy depends on IP geolocation data, which is good but not perfect.
People look for this when spam submissions, brute-force logins or fraudulent orders come mostly from regions where they do no business. Blocking outright is not always best: a managed challenge lets real people through while stopping most automated traffic, so the choice of action matters.
What's Included
- Setting up country-based firewall rules for the regions you specify
- Choosing block vs. challenge based on what fits your situation
- Testing the rule doesn't accidentally affect legitimate visitors
- Confirming the targeted traffic is actually being stopped
What's NOT Included
- Deciding which countries to block — that's your call, I'll implement it
- VPN/proxy traffic that masks true origin (a separate, harder problem)
- Legal/compliance advice about geographic restrictions
How It Works
- I review the traffic or logs you point me to in order to confirm the countries involved.
- I create a custom firewall rule in Cloudflare matching the country codes you specify.
- I choose block or managed challenge for each rule depending on what you want to achieve.
- I make exceptions where needed, for example for your own IPs, payment webhooks or monitoring services.
- I test requests to confirm that legitimate traffic still passes.
- I check the firewall events log to confirm the targeted traffic is now being stopped.
In practice: you buy the service, send over whatever access or details the job needs, I investigate and do the work, and you confirm it's resolved before we call it done.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I block a country on Cloudflare?
- With a custom firewall rule that matches the country code and applies a block or challenge action. I set this up and test it.
- Should I block or challenge traffic?
- Blocking stops everyone from that country, while a challenge lets genuine visitors prove they are human. I help pick the one that suits your situation.
- Will blocking countries stop all the spam?
- It will reduce traffic from those regions, but it will not stop attackers using VPNs or proxies in other countries.
- Can you tell me which countries I should block?
- That decision is yours; I implement it. I can point out what the logs show, but not advise on strategy.
- Could it block my real customers?
- Visitors travelling or using a VPN may appear to come from another country, so I test and use challenge rules where the risk is real.
- Is this legal advice on geographic restrictions?
- No. Legal or compliance questions about restricting access are outside the scope of this service.
